HR PROPAGATION FORECAST BULLETIN NR 32 ARLP032
FROM ARRL HEADQUARTERS
NEWINGTON CT AUGUST 8, 1988
TO ALL RADIO AMATEURS BT
THE SOLAR FLUX DIPPED DOWNWARD IN THE FIRST FEW DAYS OF AUGUST,
REACHING A LOW OF 155 ON THE 5TH. THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN A CYCLE 22
HIGH AS RECENTLY AS JUNE HOWEVER. THE CURVE TURNED UPWARD TO 160 ON
THE 6TH AND 166 ON THE 7TH, AND THE NUMBER AND DENSITY OF SPOT GROUPS
SEEN ON SUNDAY POINT TO SOMEWHAT HIGHER FLUX READINGS THIS WEEK, AND
PROBABLY LATER IN THE MONTH.
THROUGH THE SUMMER, AND UNTIL LATE SEPTEMBER, SOLAR FLUX LEVELS WILL
BE OF INTEREST MAINLY BECAUSE THEY SHOW HOW CYCLE 22 IS GOING. FOR
THE NEXT FEW WEEKS THE ACTIVITY OF THE EARTHS MAGNETIC FIELD IS MORE
IMPORTANT, AT LEAST TO THOSE OF US IN THE NORTH TEMPERATE ZONE.
THE MAGNETIC A AND K INDICIES, GIVEN HOURLY BY WWV, ARE HELPFUL HERE.
LOW VALUES ARE ASSOCIATED WITH STABLE PROPAGATION CONDITIONS ON HIGH
LATITUDE CIRCUITS, SUCH AS NORTHERNNUSA TO NORTHERN EUROPE.
VFOR THE FORECAST WEEK THERE SHOULD BE A RISING K INDEX, PROBABLY BY
THE 8TH, AND A RETURN TO LOWER VALUES BY MI WEEK, WHEN PROPAGATION
IN THE HIGHER LATITUDES SHOULD IMPROVE, AND HOLD FAIR TO GOOD ABOUT
THE 10TH TO 12TH. ANOTHER DISTURBED PERIOD IS LIKELY A FEW DAYS
LATER.
WITH THE SUN CHANGING VISUALLY FROM DAY TO DAY, AS MARKEDLY AS IT IS
NOW, THE TREND IN THE WWV K INDICIES IS THE BEST INFORMATION
AVAILABLE TO AMATEURS AND IT I NEVER MORE THAN THREE HOURS OLD.
MAKING YOUR OWN SUN OBSERVATIONS IS EASY AND VERY INTERESTING. FOR
MORE INFORMATION SEE THE PROPAGATION CHAPTER IN ANY ARRL HANDBOOK
SINCE 1976. SPECIFIC QUESTIONI WILL BE ANSWERED BY THE WRITER.
THE ADDRESS THROUGH EARLY SEPTEMBER IS E. P. TILTON, W1HDQ, PO BOX
137, CANTON, CT 06019. PLEASE ENCLOSE AN SASE AR
